Benefits Of Investing In Regular Massage and How To Find a Professional You Can Trust
While I know going to the spa for a day sounds like a true luxury (and it can be), getting a massage has many benefits for health and wellbeing. As a business owner, I find it important to get regular massages so I can feel great and focus on growing my business and leading my team.
I asked my massage therapist Mike Bazis from Haven Wellness in Philadelphia, PA to explain some of the benefits of massage therapy and how to find a professional you can trust.
What are the benefits of massage therapy?
Mike says, "Depending upon the modality, regular massage can offer a range of benefits. From relaxation, lowered resting heart rate, and better circulation at a very basic level all the way through improved muscle functioning and injury recovery from techniques such as myofascial release and craniosacral therapy."
I have found that during the pandemic, it’s been much more challenging to get a massage, and my usual massage-a-month practice has been on hold. Since I have been more sedentary and working from home like so many of us, I have felt more tension in my neck and shoulders. One of my more bizarre seeming pandemic purchases in early March was actually a massage chair I found from Costco. While it seemed a little impulsive at the time, my entire family has been using it to relax, unwind and work the kinks out of our muscles
How to find a massage therapist you can trust:
While there are many massage therapists who offer a range of modalities, it is important to find the right practitioner that will meet your needs and practice appropriate hygiene and modesty protocols.
Mike recommends that you start your search by asking friends or family members who they like. He says, "Word of mouth is a fantastic method, friends generally know you better than a google review. Other than that, the AMBP or AMTA therapist finder pages can be a great resource.”
You might want to ask about the massage therapist's COVID cleaning protocols and also their draping practices for modesty. Most of the common massage types require you to take off most if not all of your clothing. Some people prefer to leave their underwear on for a massage and others don't. It’s a personal choice.
The best way to find the right massage therapist is to try a few that come highly recommended. Most massage therapists will take you through a short consultation before they begin any bodywork. They'll ask about any concerns they should be addressing, your health history, and if you've ever had a massage before. You'll get the most out of your massage if you can give the therapist a good idea of your needs and goals for the massage.
Once I find a practitioner that I like, I tend to stick with them for years and years. It’s especially nice to find someone that can do house calls when it is safe to do so. That way the whole family can have sessions and it’s easier to keep up with a consistent schedule. Not having to rush across town to make it to a massage appointment gives you more time to relax and enjoy your treatment. I recommend stocking up on some amazing bath and shower products or scented candles and one of my colorful robes to bring the spa experience into your home.
