Grazing Giraffes: What Inspired our Giraffe Print Pajamas
Our Grazing Giraffes print was originally inspired by iconic boutique hotel Giraffe Manor in the leafy suburb of Nairobi. A resident herd of Rothschild’s giraffes will occasionally pop into hotel guests’ morning tea before heading back into their forest sanctuary. So intrigued by this special place, Print Designer Christiane started out by painting interiors with the idea of hiding a few giraffes in the scenery at the end. Ultimately we decided the gentle giants had enough charisma to really be the focal point of the design!
On top of admiring this unique hotel destination, we've also received endless requests for giraffes over the years, and for good reason! They are so magical, their spotted patterns are so chic. Their spots are like human fingerprints - in that no two giraffes share the same spot pattern, and their long necks and legs are fascinating (they can run up to 35 miles an hour). They are actually the tallest mammals on Earth and can somehow exist on only 5-30 minutes of sleep in a 24 hour period - if only we could do the same!
Giraffe Print Pjs in the Making
Instead of adding a lot of background to the mix, stylized foliage was incorporated to give the giraffes some bright, natural surroundings. The plant in this print isn’t based on a real flower, but is a modern embodiment of some of the simplified flora found on antique manuscript paintings and the murals and fabrics inspired by travels to India. We experimented with a variety of different ground colors - but felt like the sage would be pretty to try as it’s not a color we’ve had the chance to offer yet.
