Behind the Print: Hen House
Hen House Pajamas | What Inspired this Chicken Print
Our Print Designer Christiane and I both love chickens. It’s actually through a chicken screenprint that her and I first got connected many years ago! It seemed fitting that we would finally feature these comical critters on a design. The peach trees and hens are super cute and make a great pairing together. Chickens (along with other domesticated fowl like ducks and geese) are used a lot in organic farming to help keep pests at bay! Basically they free range in the orchards during the day, eating lots of worms, snails, bugs and other pests that go for the fruit- so we thought it was fun to show them in Hen House.
“I’ve created a lot of chicken-themed art throughout my career, but this was an exciting first since I’d never made a chicken textile design before! There are just so many gorgeous different breeds of chickens out there - from funny silkies who have poufs of feathers that cover their heads and feet, to beautifully patterned Wyandottes and Ameraucanas. I wanted to capture a couple different varieties in this print, stylizing them to really emphasize the feather patterning.” - Print Designer Christiane
Chicken Connections | Into the Hen House
Chickens are a common critter to have where I grew up and I think they are so incredibly fun. I love seeing the chickens at Beach Plum farm - and it was fun to be able to do the photoshoot there (which is close to my house in NJ). Christiane volunteers at an animal sanctuary called Chenoa Manor where an intern once showed her a fun magic trick that allows you to hypnotize a chicken! So it’s safe to say that these quirky creatures provide endless entertainment.
Shopping Our Farmhouse Chic Print
There are some cute hidden gems if you look closely at this print! A few of the chickens are munching on worms, or eyeing up a couple silly snails who are beelining for some fallen fruit. There are also delicate trumpet vines climbing the trunks of the peach trees. I especially love this print for its Ballet Pink colorway. It’s a lovely feminine shade that I think works so well when you’re transitioning from summer to fall. The Back to Bed Nightgown has become a favorite for this design. The dainty lace and adorable buttons really add something to this already beautiful print! Our organic cotton Robe also really stands out in Hen House. I’m so envious of those of you who can wrap up in this style and head out to your chicken coop in the morning for fresh eggs!
