World Embroidery Day | Get to Know Printfresh Embroidery
Take a peek behind Printfresh embroidered pajamas in honor of World Embroidery Day. From what inspires our designs to how they’re made, I’ll chat about all things embroidery in this special behind the scenes blog.
Embroidery Pajamas For a Print-Focused Brand
Print and embroidery are two of my favorite mediums in textile. I especially love working on the embroideries since I really enjoy the act of drawing the designs, stitching them, and then figuring out the color placements as I go. Plus any project I can do while watching TV with my daughter and dog is fun! The embroidery is a nice addition to the line since they tend to be a little more sparse and feature light grounds so that the stitches can really show.
The Embroidery Process | Inspiration to Execution
Like with print design - I usually come up with a theme or idea of something, and then sketch out on paper at life size motifs, then go over them in stitch marks to envision how much detail I can add in. Then I trace loosely over them with a pencil onto fabric and start stitching with colors that I like. As I go, I figure out what kind of additional details I’ll add. Once the embroidery mock is finished, we digitize the design and then our factory makes yardage. The threads are hand clipped and then the pattern pieces are cut and sewn!
Unique & Delicate | What Makes Embroidery So Special
I learned how to needlepoint and do embroidery as a child and have dabbled with it off and on over the years. I love being able to incorporate the skills that I’ve developed personally and apply them to a professional setting. Working through the ideas and focusing on repetition and detail makes embroidery such a special artform. So I hope shoppers appreciate that and can find these designs as charming as I do! I definitely imagine our embroidered sleepwear becoming heirloom pieces in a PJ drawer.
Some Of My Favorite Embroidered Pajamas
Daughters of Triton is one of the original embroidered designs and it’s definitely become a staple within our brand. People are really drawn to mermaids and have always connected with these mythical creatures, so it’s been amazing seeing how shoppers have made this embroidery their own! In honor of World Embroidery Day we released a silhouette called the Naya Nightie featuring Daughters of Triton. This design is hand-smocked which is a technique I really love. It’s a very time intensive design process, and garments done in this style can take up to an entire day to create due to the skilled workmanship that is needed to stitch them. However this process means each nightie is one is one-of–a-kind and totally unique. We hope you like this new technique and silhouette - because I have a million ideas of more motifs we could try here!
It’s fun to be able to design embroidery for the holidays and special events as well. For example Bubbly Brunch was designed for our Bridal Sleepwear Collection. It’s a feminine look that was such a joy to create! Whether it’s a sweet favorite like Beekeeper or a baking must-have like Home Chef, there’s always something new to embroider. You never know what’s just around the corner for next season!
