Amsterdam Travel Guide
Where to Stay in Amsterdam
Of course, the first thing I have to talk about is where we stayed! Our time spent in Amsterdam consisted of a few nights stay at The Hoxton, an amazing boutique hotel located on The Nine Streets right in the heart of Herengracht canal. From the hotel’s design and style to the amazing food offerings right on-site, these accommodations are second to none. Every room is designed uniquely and includes special touches that make for a one-of-a-kind experience. Being walking distance from so many great shops, cafes and hidden gems in the area was also so worthwhile. I’d highly recommend a stay here — not only was it great for my family but their single rooms also look perfect for a solo traveler!
Where to Eat in Amsterdam
After settling down, the next order of business was to find food. We ate lots of meals at The Hoxton — the options were delicious, and it was super convenient to have great dining right at the hotel. I also loved stopping in for drinks at Bar Mokum. They incorporate mainly Dutch spirits & liquors into their cocktails so it felt like you were getting an authentic Amsterdam experience. The ambience there was super fun. You never felt like you were intruding on the locals’ secret spot, so it was very welcoming for everyone! One of the highlights for the kids was the treats at Bakkerij Egstorf. Their stroopwafels and sugary Nutella waffles were delicious, and we just couldn’t get enough!
Best Shopping in Amsterdam
In between our delicious meals, we also wanted to explore the shopping scene in Amsterdam. The Nine Streets (or Negen Straatjes) is definitely the destination to hit for cute shopping options. Laura Dols is fabulous for vintage finds. They specialize in 50s clothing and accessories, unique dresses, hats, shoes and bags, so you’re bound to find something truly unique. I also loved Ko because they had the best homewares selection.

What to Do in Amsterdam
Other than shopping, we also wanted to explore the fascinating landmarks and destinations that the city had to offer. One day, we went to the NEMO Science Museum, and the kids had so much fun. Their exhibits on technology, energy and electricity were fascinating, and we loved that you could interact with so much. Of course, we also went on a boat ride through the canal since this is something that cannot be missed! For a more romantic experience, this charming one would be great for a special occasion. I’d also recommend a trip to the Muiderslot Castle. It’s a picturesque medieval destination with a beautiful town surrounding it, so exploring the grounds and traveling back in time was definitely a highlight of the trip!
