Behind the Print: Hummingbird Haven
Listen close to hear the hum. Our newest print Hummingbird Haven has flown into spring for the most colorful season. With the flowers blooming and garden awakening, it’s the perfect time to debut this sweet new print featuring adorable feathered friends. Follow along with our sneak behind the style with Printfresh Founder Amy Voloshin.
We have been getting hummingbird requests for a while and thought it would be such a beautiful bird to feature for the spring. We don’t do a lot of florals in our collection - but for spring, how could we not? This pretty pairing in bright pink is such a fun way to embrace the warmer weather.
Hummingbird Haven: What Inspired Our Hummingbird Print
Our Print Designer Christiane’s Mom is a dedicated birdwatcher, and has been begging her to make a hummingbird print for years now. So when we brainstormed designs that would make great Mother’s Day gifts, featuring these delicate flyers seemed like a perfect pick. We wanted this print to have a beautiful and botanic feeling, and looked to antique naturalist illustrations for inspiration. Christiane also collects vintage nature books for both reading and picture browsing, such as John Muir’s Wilderness Essays and Ernest Seton Thompson’s Wild Animals I Have Known. The gorgeous colored lithographs of hummingbirds from the 19th century served as amazing inspiration for our print.
The hummingbirds featured in this print weren’t based on specific breeds, but incorporate some attributes and coloring styles indicative of a few different varieties. We always end up recoloring our prints into a rainbow of options, so when it comes to bird species we never try to stay too close to a particular variety. Along with the birds, this style includes different florals that attract hummingbirds, including morning glories, orchids and stylized azaleas.
The Perfect Gift for the Birdwatcher
Hummingbird Haven is obviously a great print and gift for the birdwatcher in your life. I personally love birdwatching. My family spends a lot of time in the Cape May area in southern New Jersey which is known for being a key destination for bird enthusiasts. Whether I’m watching from the Cape May Meadows, kayaking out to the marsh or sipping coffee in cotton pjs and quietly sitting to observe the birds that pop up in the yard, it’s always such a relaxing pastime.
There are actually over 330 species of hummingbirds, and what’s so interesting is that they’re only found in North and South America! We get a few different varieties migrating in the warmer months, and it’s always particularly satisfying to see them in the city. Christiane, who learned to love birdwatching from her mom, is all about attracting the colorful flyers in her backyard. Fun fact, it turns out that hummingbirds need protein. So finding a feeder that holds fruits and veggies will not only attract the birds, but also fruit flies that they like to eat. Apparently, one hummingbird can eat 100 fruit flies in one day!
