Sweet Dreams Series: A Q&A With Jane Win
Jewelry has the power to tell a story, and for Jane Win, that story is one of meaning, connection, and celebration. Founded with the vision of creating beautiful jewelry that resonates deeply with the wearer, Jane Win’s collections are inspired by words, travel, and life’s defining moments. From layering tips to personal favorites, this conversation dives into the passion and creativity behind the brand, offering a glimpse into what makes these pieces so special.
What drew you to start Jane Win?
I worked in fashion for over 20 years and saw an opportunity in the market for semi-fine jewelry that connects with the wearer. I dreamt of gold coins that you held on to in a time of need, purchased for yourself to celebrate an accomplishment, or proudly gifted to a friend. I knew women would love it, and I wanted to create something special - a piece that would bring joy and exceed all expectations.
What inspires your creativity?
It really all starts with the ‘word’ and bringing that to life. I write the meaning behind the piece before designing the coin – because it’s those words that truly connect with the wearer. I started the company with Forever, Love, Joy, Peace, and Strong - all words that women can truly connect with. I am inspired by what is going on in the world. We launch a new coin every Jan 1st as our ‘take’ on what the world needs that year; this year, it was Grace.
From there, of course, I am inspired by travel – and I travel a lot. The quatrefoil and arrows in the LOVE coin came from an iron gate I saw in Capri, Italy. I literally dream of jewelry and design ideas. I wake up and think – we have to do a series of morning glory flowers! LOL I am not sure if this is normal, but finding meaning in words, traveling, experiencing art and dreaming of jewelry 😊. That’s where it all comes from!
As a female-founded brand like us, what other brands do you admire, especially during Women’s History Month?
I could go on all day here! YOU! I admire and appreciate my friendship with Amy, your founder. I have so much love for La Ligne, Cara Cara, Larroude, and La Vie Style House—they’re all about celebrating individuality and creating their take on fashion. I also love the powerhouse women behind The Skimm—those gals are legends. They’ve built something that empowers and connects women in a totally new way. Also, while I’m at it—shout out to Jenna Bush Hager. She’s got that perfect combo of warmth and smarts, and she’s doing amazing things with Read with Jenna. We are honored when we see her wearing JW in the morning.
We love featuring your jewelry in our shoots! What’s it like collaborating with fellow female designers on creative projects?
I really appreciate when I get to work with other brands. It’s like the ultimate girl gang where we all bring our A-game, and magic happens. The best part is when people start mixing and matching my jewelry with their own favorite pieces – whether that be jewelry they already have or apparel. Taking what we have created and making it their own – that is the goal.
Can you talk about some of your favorite pieces?
I have always loved coins, hence the collection, but the snakes in PROTECT and all of the lucky symbols in the LUCKY collection are what I gravitate toward. I love the new Printfresh PJs in the Lucky Clover print – that 4-leaf clover is a motif we use a lot. I naturally pick up our LUCKY Original Coin with the clover and horseshoe. Lately, I have been wearing it on with our Gilver Lariat Chain for a mixed metal silver/gold look (feels a bit edgy!) or our Gold Neck Cuff for an old-school vibe.
What are some of your favorite styling tips & ways to wear your jewelry?
Learning how to layer is the key. It’s all about stacking different pieces to create your own personal story. I love combining different textures, metals, and lengths and mixing and matching pieces from different collections. The beauty of jewelry is that you can wear it your way, whether you’re going for a bold look or something more subtle. The key? This sounds so silly, but build a chain ‘wardrobe’ so you can hit different lengths. Our biggest layering tip: Start with a Fashion Chain as your first layer, an Original Coin as your second, and a fun-shaped charm as your last and longest layer.
How do you hope your jewelry makes shoppers feel when wearing it?
One thing that I love about our jewelry – especially our coins – is that you receive compliments. Can you think of anything better than someone going out of their way to tell you that they love it? That always makes me feel good - I guess I want people to feel that love. More so, I think I want people to feel that connection with the piece. They wear a certain coin/word because it gives them Courage (our lion coin), or they wear our Peace coin because it connects them to someone they have lost. That is magic. It’s not about the brand, it’s about how they feel that connection.
