Behind the Print: Twinkling Trees
We love looking to historic arts and crafts for print inspiration and have a soft spot for antique manuscript paintings from Europe, the Middle East and Asia (our print designer visited the Keir Collection at the Dallas Museum of Art over the summer, which had a gorgeous collection of Mughal work that included both paintings and block prints). She especially loved how artists chose to stylize flora, using simplified repeating shapes and brush strokes to mimic leaves and flowers. It’s a very maximalist approach to design that still feels quiet because of the tonal approach to color — that’s actually how Twinkling Trees came to be.
Twinkling Trees: What Inspired Our Christmas Tree Pajamas
We really wanted to introduce a Christmas Tree print for the holidays since seasonal plants and foliage play such a big part of imagery in our patterns. It was fun to approach pine trees in a style that is usually used with more tropical plants and paint these holiday icons in a more nuanced, decorative way. At first we rendered the trees without any traditional holiday decorations, but after lots of debate in the studio, we felt we needed to add some baubles to give a pop of color to make them even more fun and festive.
Our print designer Christiane loves a Charlie Brown tree. Her family has a tradition where they cut down their own tree as a family the weekend after Thanksgiving. They always spend a long time debating what makes the perfect tree, and she always advocates for personality above all else! Lately her favorite variety has been a Concolor Fir. You can find really cute, skinny versions where the trunk shows through the soft, umbrella-like pine needles and looks almost birch-like. They’re like an elevated, less sad version of the quintessential Charlie Brown tree.
We just couldn't narrow down which color combination we liked more, so we decided to roll out both the Ruby and Indigo! Red is such an iconic Christmas color, and Amy’s daughter insisted that ruby is the quintessential Christmas color, making it a must in the holiday collection. But blue is one of our team’s favorite colors, as it really shows off the green in a neutral way that is cooler and calmer. We felt the combination of the two coordinating colors allowed everyone to mix and match (which make them perfect as Christmas pajamas for the family picture).
