Behind the Print: Camel's Courtyard

Camels have long been a source of inspiration for founder Amy Voloshin, but their unique meaning made them the perfect subject for a print introduction following the year we’ve just come through. We’re so excited to share some of the inspiration behind Camel’s Courtyard – and are hopeful that these beautiful symbols of endurance, persistence, adaptation, travel, humility, resilience, survival and respect carry over into 2021 for all of us.

Moving You Forward

Camels are resilient animals that are able to travel long distances across dry, hot lands – often while carrying the treasures of their owner. Travelers at heart, the camel is known for its ability to continue moving forward, despite external conditions. After a tumultuous year, it seems as though we all built up some of our more ‘camel-like’ qualities. We learned to adapt, to persist, and to survive despite challenging circumstances. As we travel forward into 2021 – we hope that our camel will remind you of those qualities that exist within all of us.

Open to Love

Camels are also symbols of love – particularly in yoga. The Ustrasana Pose (ustra in sanskrit meaning camel, and sana meaning pose allows you to open up from head to toe) links directly to your heart chakra, Anahata. This is your energy center of love, and responsible for your sense of caring and compassion.

Artistic Inspiration

Camels are beautiful and intriguing animals, so it isn’t surprising that they are commonly depicted in Mughal art (miniature style paintings that Amy loves to collect), vintage ceramics, and camel majolica garden side tables.

In these pieces of art, camels are typically depicted in their traditional decorations – including fanciful blankets and adorned halters that instantly call to mind some far-off destination.

It is this whimsical, quirky and well-traveled feeling that we hope to bring to you through the art in Camel’s Courtyard. We think of the pattern itself as something of a respite from the bustling streets of the bazaar. Sit under the canopy of palm trees and close your eyes, deeply breathing in the floral scent of the many colorful blooms.

Camel’s Courtyard pajamas are now available in two colorways – French Rose and Cloud. The rose color featured in this print is one of our favorite shades of pink and we love the unexpected contrast that comes with the dark green piping. The cloud color features a light, airy ground paired with blue and inspired by ginger jars in that classic blue and white combination.
