Dressing Up & Dressing Down | Styling Printfresh Dresses with Rhiana Wells
Can you talk about your background in styling and how you got your start?
I had my first experience in styling as a summer intern at Oprah Magazine and Lilly Pulitzer. I loved being on set and assisting the lead stylists, but it wasn’t until I started at Vineyard Vines HQ that I had the opportunity to style myself. I was incredibly lucky to have had a wonderful mentor and teacher during that time who taught me everything from on-model to still life styling techniques. In 2016 I decided to finally enter the Vogue Talent’s Brand Communicator Scholarship Competition (hosted by Vogue Italia) after thinking about it for years. I was shocked to be the first American to win and was lucky to have the opportunity to move to Milan for over a year to get my Masters in Fashion Styling and Visual Merchandising. Since returning, I’ve had the opportunity to work with some wonderful clients, like Printfresh!
Can you talk about the inspiration behind the styling of the Printfresh spring dresses?
This collection was so much fun for me to style! First, I was definitely inspired by the collection itself. Amy did such an incredible job with the prints and designs and I really wanted to do each piece justice in the execution of the styling. I combed through the WWD and Vogue archives to pull inspiration from past resort wear collections and I know that the way I accessorized and elevated each look was inspired by all of the images I pulled together!
What are some simple ways to elevate a Printfresh dress for spring for a more fancy occasion?
I love the versatility of these dresses - there’s truly so many ways to style them up or down. Dressing them up is all about the accessories! Add a rattan wedge or block heel, a statement earring, and a fun clutch.
What about some simple ways to pair down a dress for a less elevated occasion?
I love adding a white sneaker or flip flop and layering with a denim jacket for a more casual option!
What are some spring accessories, jewelry and shoes you’re really loving (especially that go great with Printfresh styles)?
I love partnering with accessory designers to borrow their incredible pieces to complete each Printfresh look! I’ve been so fortunate to be able to style with Le Mogador shoes and sandals, Beth Ladd earrings, CANVAS Style jewelry, JAGged Edge jewelry, and BTB Los Angeles handbags for recent Printfresh shoots. I'm personally obsessed over every piece, they were the perfect compliment to each Printfresh look!
What’s a spring trend you’re really loving?
I’m really loving the 3D floral trend that everyone showed on the runway for Spring’23. I helped design my own wedding dress that used big bold 3D flowers and I loved seeing them become a trend. Prada, Magda Butrym, and Carolina Herrera all had such stunning 3D floral pieces! It’s incredibly feminine yet very maximalist!
If you had to pick: A bold shoe, bold piece of jewelry or bold handbag?
This is a tough one! I’m definitely “more is more” when it comes to my personal style so I’d have to say ALL 3!
