Ask Amy Anything: The First Edition

I’ve always loved art and design. I didn’t travel a lot growing up (we lived on a farm, so it was hard to get away), but I treasured the few trips we did take. I always knew I wanted to travel extensively and was lucky to go on trips through school to Ghana, Cuba, and France, which really opened my eyes to how inspiring different locales can be. Going to art galleries, art and decorative object museums, and taking in the world around me is a great way to find new perspectives. And, even simple things like going to grocery stores and looking at packaging can be so fun and lead to new print ideas. 

I also love getting ideas from our fans! So many of our customers and team members have helped inspire prints and silhouettes that have become beloved favorites. 

For Printfresh, it was our long pajama set. But I designed a purple elastic crop top in the 80s that my mom helped me draft and sew. I loved it!

So many women have inspired me throughout my career. I admire Diana Vreeland’s editorial eye and her love for the extraordinary; it has always resonated with me. I also deeply respect Sarah Wetenhall, the owner and CEO of The Colony Hotel in Palm Beach. She has done an incredible job revitalizing this iconic hotel while preserving its rich history and infusing it with a fresh, modern sensibility. Under her leadership, The Colony has become a design-lover’s paradise, known for its signature pink façade, whimsical interiors, and deep appreciation for artistry.

Taking time to enjoy personal hobbies such as urban sketching, watercoloring, and journaling all help me stay grounded. Keeping a small bin of art supplies by my dining table makes it easy to grab my materials and do something creative without having to set up. Also, learning to have artistic practices that are easy to do in tight timelines, and when you don’t have a ton of energy, has really helped as well. 

The Artist’s Way is a fantastic book for unlocking your creativity. Many of my creative friends have read and done the work in the book, and we’ve all found it to be transformative - but it takes about a year, I think, to get into habits with it and implement it into your creative life. I highly recommend it. 

Keep in mind that it’s not always about creating something that will be produced later on, but allowing yourself the freedom to explore creatively, etc. You never know where it will take you!

No plans at this time to expand into Europe, but that’s not to say that sometime in the future! We have gotten many requests, so definitely something to consider.

We have designed bedding and quilts in the past. Sometimes we do special collections that you can find over at Sundance. We just launched satin pillowcases that keep selling out so quickly. It’s been great to have such a positive reaction, and I’m interested in exploring bedding more in the upcoming years. 

Get more sleep! And, to not take things so seriously. I had a fantastic time in college, and it was such a transformative experience and gave me these incredible skills to bring to the industry, but I probably should have taken better care of myself. I was always doing too much (working, interning, staying up all night to complete projects), and I should have slowed down a little. These days, although I probably still do too much, I’m better at identifying when I need to get some rest and have more downtime built into my routine. 

I would tell myself: Trust your instincts and be patient. In the early days, I often felt like we had to do everything at once; we experienced such rapid growth in our business, but I needed to slow down sometimes and try to embrace steady growth, which can lead to stronger foundations.

I’ve always loved the French Impressionists, the mood and color are just so pretty - I was totally obsessed when I was a child with the work of Monet, and later grew to really love the work of Vuillard. I love fashion illustrations from the 30s, and all sorts of quirky art from the 70s - especially packaging and commercial art from that time period.  

Yes! Stay tuned for new Printfresh fabrics coming soon. We’ve been working on something very special that I can’t wait to share with you in the Spring of ‘26.  

Much of the art that inspires me is commercial vintage art (like packaging) or vintage objects, so I don’t always know the creators. But I love following illustrators on Patreon to hear more about their work and see their process. I especially like following Sarah van Dongen, Gayle&Jennifer (Gayle Kabaker and Jennifer Orkin Lewis), and Erika Lamar. It’s fun to see how they fill their sketchbooks and hear them talk through how they do things. Someday, I would love to attend one of their workshops!

I love being a part of groups like The Southern C and Philadelphia’s Urban Sketching Group. These creative connections and outlets allow me to brainstorm with fellow artists and business owners. Just getting a new perspective is so helpful! I have also found Skillshare to be a good way to learn new things and start up a project or interest when you are feeling stuck.
