Eco-Friendly in the Bedroom

I’m always trying to improve my sleep, and there are hundreds of products out there that claim to do just that. When you can’t sleep at night, it can be tempting to try every new item on the market, but that often leads to unnecessary purchases and waste. Instead, I’ve found a few items that help me fall asleep (and stay asleep) each night.

Amy’s Must Have Products for Better Sleep

1. Avocado Organic Superfine Suvin Cotton Sheets
Great sheets just cannot be understated. Slip into these lavishly soft (100% GOTS Organic Cotton) sheets and you’ll instantly feel more relaxed and ready for bed.

2. Mist diffuser with Lavender essential oil
I love adding Lavender Essential Oil to my mist diffuser… It's been a great bedroom addition that always helps me float off to sleep.

Vitruvi carries beautiful diffusers. And for a great quality oil, Peace Valley Lavender Farm is an excellent choice (for Philly locals, they are headquartered just an hour outside of the city)! While you’re stocking up, consider grabbing some lavender sugar or infused honey for a bedtime cup of tea.

3. Kindle for light reading
I know all too well the temptation to scroll Instagram or binge the latest Netflix series before bed… and I also know that these habits wreak havoc on my sleep. Instead, I try to read for 15 minutes each night.

I’m a fan of reading on a kindle, especially because it lets me have several books at my fingertips at once. I switch from my current non-fiction reads to something light at night to keep my mind from racing.

4. Sleep mask & ear plugs
If my sleep gets interrupted by city noise or my kids - I love to use a sleep mask to block out light in the morning and ear plugs to reduce noise to get a little more sleep.

5. Bedside carafe and cup
I fill a carafe and glass with fresh water each night so it’s always nearby if I wake up thirsty in the middle of the night. I use a vintage carafe that I love – it has lilies of the valley painted on it and it’s so pretty. But if I was shopping for a new one, this set from Cultiverre is made in Bogata, Colombia from recycled glass.

6. Sustainable sleepwear
Ok, this may be our shameless plug, but sleeping in something beautiful and comfortable really does help set the tone for a good night’s sleep. In winter, I prefer a long set to stay warm, and sometimes even slip on a pair of our cozy socks.

7. Non-Toxic Furniture
There are so many toxic chemicals in many traditional bedroom furniture pieces (which is why I tend to look for vintage pieces made of real wood). VOC’s (volatile organic compounds) are the primary concern, and can easily evaporate into the air we breathe. We found an awesome “cheat sheet” from our friends at The Fitlery for finding non-toxic bedroom furniture, which we will definitely be bookmarking!
