Sustainable Gift Ideas for Mother's Day

Celebrating mom is something I have always looked forward to. While I love gifts, I am always cognizant of my impact on the environment.  I’ve rounded up some of my favorite gifts for moms that are less of a strain on the environment.

To me, sustainable gifts are things that won’t end up in a landfill. High-quality edible gifts, plants, and purchasing from sustainably-minded businesses are all great options, and it’s easier than ever these days to shop this way with a little planning. Here are a few of my favorites!

1. Delivery from Bread Basket

This year I am sending my mom a delivery from Bread Basket. They group together some of NY’s best bakeries and ship delicious items to your door. It’s a fun way to support a small business.

2. The Starter Kit, Jacobsen Salt

If your mom loves to cook, salt may be one of the most overlooked flavor enhancers in her kitchen. The Jacobsen Salt The Starter Kit ($110)  includes the right salt for every need including salt discs for perfect pasta water.

3. Aurora Grace chocolates

Aurora Grace hand-painted chocolate bonbons are another great choice for moms who have a sweet tooth. With classic flavors like liquid salted caramel, S’mores, and pecan pie these chocolates are as delicious as they are beautiful.

4. A gift certificate to a local restaurant

A gift certificate for dinner (or takeout) from a favorite local spot is another eco-friendly option. Support a local business while you give your mom something to look forward to.

5. Live orchids

I love low-stakes plants like orchids that I don’t feel pressure to maintain long term.  I see them as a longer-term version of cut flowers, and they typically have a lower carbon footprint. If you want to get one for your mom, Trader Joe’s often has a nice selection or Urban Stems will deliver directly.

6. 100 Circles Bracelet, Lingua Nigra Jewelry

If you want to purchase a special piece of jewelry for your mom, I love the sustainable and beautiful pieces from Lingua Nigra Jewelry. The 100 Circles Bracelet is both simple, elegant and fairly universal in style.

7. Printfresh sleepwear

Treat your mom to some new pajamas or a robe. My team and I have created sleepwear that’s meant to appeal to men and women of all ages. Browse our separates or send mom a matching long or short set (of a gift card!) All of our sleepwear is hand-screen printed and sewn in Jaipur by highly skilled artisans, and is made from organic cotton. Read more about our sustainability commitment and our decision to use organic cotton

If you’re looking for more brands that produce amazing pieces with minimal environmental impact, be sure to read my round-up of favorite minimal waste brands. Most importantly when gift giving, think about what your mom would appreciate - it may just be time spent with you, which is the most sustainable option of all!
