Printfresh x Simon & Schuster Book Club: Meet Author Alice Hoffman
We’re back for our fall edition of the Printfresh x Simon & Schuster Book Club! We had the special chance to ask author Alice Hoffman some questions on her latest novel, ‘The Invisible Hour.’ Set in a quaint New England town, this tale weaves between timelines, unveiling the mysteries and secrets that bind its characters. Follow along as Alice takes us through the inspiration behind this novel and even some fun tidbits on her past works.
What inspired you to write The Invisible Hour?
I’ve always been very interested in New England writer Nathaniel Hawthorne, but my real inspiration came from my relationship with my mother.
What’s one thing you’d like to share with shoppers who read the book?
This is a love story outside of time and it has a lot to do with the traumas of both characters’ childhoods.
What’s an interesting fact about the book or your writing process that readers may not know about?
My initial draft of the book was completely different. A few of my friends read it and said this is not the book and they were right! I went back and started from scratch.
What’s your favorite part of the book?
The walks that Ivy takes with her daughter Mia through the forest, when she tells her stories and they’re almost invisible.
Your Practical Magic series and The Invisible Hour feel like such fantastic reads for fall, do you gravitate towards writing for this season or does it just come naturally?
October is my favorite month and autumn is my favorite time of the year. So I guess it does come naturally.
We have some true fan girls of Aquamarine who grew up with the book and movie (and were so excited to hear you were our Printfresh Book Club author this month). Shamelessly, are there any fun facts you can share from writing this story?
So many young women I know grew up with the book and the movie Aquamarine. My dream is that they’ll do a remake of the film that we can all enjoy together.
