Printfresh Team’s Ways to Stay Grounded
Amy (Founder and Creative Director)
Planning always helps me feel grounded. I like to get organized and think about who I’ll be gifting and try to figure out things in advance. I do like to surprise people with thoughtful gifts whenever possible - so it takes a little extra advanced planning to minimize the pressure I put on myself. Doing yoga consistently and focusing on nightly meditation practices, as well as journaling are also really helpful for creating a more grounded mindset. As far as apps go, Les Mills is great for yoga practices, they also have a wide variety of other exercise routines including 30 minute classes that fit into my mornings easily. Additionally, Headspace is phenomenal for managing stress.

Group exercise is always a key way for me to stay grounded. Getting up early can be tough come those colder months but being dedicated to an in-person class is an amazing way to start the morning so I can handle all the holiday stresses that come throughout the rest of the day. I LOVE Retro Pilates in Philadelphia, their group reformer classes are phenomenal and I feel so much better (and stronger) after 50 minutes of hard, endorphin-filled work. There’s also something about a hot bath after a long day that really settles me. Give me all the self-care necessities, bath bombs, face masks, candles… stress just melts away!

Journaling has absolutely changed my life. Writing down my feelings allows me to work through what I’m thinking and prevents me from internalizing my stress, which can be really detrimental to your mental and physical health. It also allows me the opportunity to set goals or plans that may help mitigate some of the negative feelings, and it provides a written history of how I’ve overcome any past issues. In addition to free-form writing and traditional journaling, I also have a gratitude journal, which is a great way to remind yourself of all the things you have to be thankful for—something we might forget to appreciate when we’re in the middle of a stressful time.

Saying no to plans. The holidays are obviously a busy time, as most of us try to fit in time planning, preparing and celebrating with various loved ones, on top of our regular daily responsibilities. And as much as I love adding extra cocktail parties, holiday trips and brunches into this special time of year, giving yourself the freedom to not commit to every plan is ok. And given I’m the type of person who actually appreciates to spend time alone now and then, taking moments for myself to recharge during hectic times is essential. It’s also so much more tempting to stay home when you have the coziest pjs to lounge around in.

Like Amy, planning also helps me stay grounded. I recently got this concept planner from Poketo and just the act of writing out my daily and weekly workload on paper makes me feel better. I work as our E-commerce Specialist, so planning down to the last detail for the upcoming hectic holiday season has helped me stay focused. Also, I am addicted to reformer Pilates and do Solid Core classes about 3 times a week. It is by far the hardest workout I’ve ever done but it completely shuts my mind off when I’m in there for those 50 minutes and for that I’m thankful.

I am an obé fitness superfan. Most mornings you can find me bouncing on a mini trampoline or taking a boxing class. After a heart pumping cardio class, I love to take it down a notch with Pilates or yoga. I find that cardio followed by intentional movement and breathwork helps me manage stress and stay centered. So much of our mood is dictated by our bodies. Because of that I make it a priority to stay hydrated, eat diverse fruits and veggies, and snack on healthy fat like nuts and peanut butter. Holiday shopping, entertaining, and traveling can be very stressful, so it is so important to nourish yourself! Dr. Ellen Vora’s book Anatomy of Anxiety is also full of great tips for managing daily stress through easy lifestyle adjustments.

Having my meals planned out for the week definitely helps me to feel less stressed, so when the weather gets colder I break out my crock pot and start making soup. Keeping veggie scraps like onion and carrot tops in the freezer (I love my stand-up stasher bag for this purpose!) means I always have what I need to make homemade veggie stock, and keeping other soup essentials like lentils on hand means I am always a few hours away from a week's worth of meals.
